X video size and specs

A standard X account can post videos up to 20 minutes and 8 GB, and Premium or verified accounts get 125 minutes and 16 GB. X documents two sets of numbers: hard limits that cause an upload to fail, and recommended settings that decide how good the result looks. Older pages with outdated figures still circulate. The rows below come from the current X developer documentation, with the page and the check date beside each one. We left out formats and any limit we could not read directly.

Mind the frame on X

X accepts aspect ratios between 1:3 and 3:1. A standard account can post 20 minutes and up to 8 GB, and Premium or verified accounts get more. Resize your video for X or shrink it if the file is too big.

Small frames are fine, big ones are capped

The documented maximum dimensions are 1280 by 1024, and the recommended sizes are all 720 pixels on the short side. A clean 720p export is therefore the sensible target. Higher resolutions are described as a perk for subscribed accounts, so do not spend time on a 4K export for a normal post.

Square and tall shapes both work, up to a 1:3 ratio. A 1:1 square takes up the most room in a busy timeline on a phone, which is why it is a popular pick for short clips.

Check which page you are reading

X documentation has changed over time. An older developer page still lists 512 MB and 140 seconds as the post limits, while the current documentation lists 8 GB and 20 minutes for standard accounts. We use the current page, and the older numbers now describe direct messages for standard accounts.

If an upload fails at a size well under 8 GB, compressing the file is the quickest fix, and doing it in your browser keeps the video on your device.

Bitrate is the quality lever

X suggests at least 5,000 kbps for video. Dropping far below that saves megabytes but softens motion first. If you need to shrink a file, lower the resolution a step before you lower the bitrate, since a clean 720p looks better than a starved 1080p. Free exports from ClipSizer are 720p, the same short side as the sizes X recommends.

Keep frame rates at 30 or 60. Variable frame rate recordings from screen capture tools are worth converting to a fixed rate first. Audio should be AAC LC at 128 kbps or more, so keep the sound track clean before you compress.

Questions

What is the X video file size limit?

For video on a post, the current documentation gives 8 GB for standard accounts and 16 GB for Premium or verified accounts.

How long can a video on X be?

Standard accounts can post up to 20 minutes. Premium or verified accounts can go up to 125 minutes. Videos shorter than half a second are rejected.

What size is best for X video?

X recommends 1280 by 720 for landscape, 720 by 1280 for portrait and 720 by 720 for square, with H.264 video and AAC audio.

Does X accept vertical video?

Yes. Any aspect ratio between 1:3 and 3:1 is within the limits, and 720 by 1280 is a recommended portrait size.
